Why I’m running: SERVICE before SELF.
After living overseas for many years, it was time to return to the United States. I searched all of northern New Jersey and Westchester County, New York for the very best place to relocate my family. We chose Allendale because of the wonderful schools and people, and we made the right choice! Allendale is awesome; it has given us so much and we love it. I am running for Council to give back to the community, to serve ALL the people of Allendale. As a retired military pilot, and part time teacher, I have plenty of time to devote to serving all the people of Allendale to the very best of my ability.
Allendale is a wonderful town: I am not here to change it, I am here to serve it.
Doug Burgoyne grew up in Ann Arbor, MI, and attended Colgate University in Hamilton, NY, graduating Magna Cum Laude/Phi Beta Kappa, with a BA in Mathematics. He captained Colgate’s Track Team as a sprinter and hurdler. He later returned to school to obtain his teaching credentials with a post BA teacher prep program through Western Governors University, which was selected by the National Council on Teaching Quality as the top teacher prep program in the USA for Secondary Mathematics.
He is fluent in English, French and Spanish as well as speaking a little bit of Chinese.
Both of Doug’s parents were/are attorneys. His father, Bert Burgoyne, was one of the nation’s top Eminent Domain attorneys, and his mother, Shirley Burgoyne, is an active criminal defense attorney working mostly pro bono representing underprivileged youth who would otherwise have little representation. At age 83, she is currently taking a case to the United States Supreme court on an issue of double jeopardy for a 17-year-old kid who the prosecutors are trying to try twice for the same crime. Way to go Mom!
Doug has four children, Ben (29), Liana (25), Mackenzie (13) and Gabriella (9). Ben and Liana both graduated from Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, VA, and currently live in Northern Virginia. Mackenzie and Gabriella both attend Brookside School here in Allendale. Both girls are fluent in French and Spanish, and Mackenzie speaks some Dutch as well.
Throughout his military career, Doug always dreamed of becoming a teacher. After retirement, he returned to school to become a Math teacher. He is a NJ certified secondary Mathematics Teacher, highly qualified to teach all math classes through Calculus and also certified in French and ESL. He taught both French and Math at NATO’s military headquarters, SHAPE* American Middle and High Schools in Mons, Belgium. Doug was also elected to serve on the board of directors for the Lycée Français in Tegucigalpa Honduras [French board of education rough equivalent].
*SHAPE = [Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe]
Currently, Mr. Burgoyne is a substitute teacher, working mostly at Brookside, sometimes at Hillside, and occasionally at Northern Highlands. If you have a student at Brookside or Hillside, ask them if they know Mr. Burgoyne! He subs at all levels, so it is very likely that he has subbed for your child. A lot of the kids are his strongest supporters! Too bad they aren’t old enough to vote yet, it would be a landslide!
Doug Burgoyne is the President of the Brookside Hillside Music & Arts Association [BHMAA], supporting the Arts for ALL students.
Doug is an experienced youth soccer coach, with a published soccer coaching instructional DVD: “Coach Doug, the Soccerhelp method” having coached U4, U6, U8/U9, U11 and U13. He led the SHAPE High School varsity boys team to a third place finish in the military European championships. In the fall, Doug will be coaching in the Allendale Recreational league. He has a Belgian Football Federation Brevet C soccer coaching license.
Doug believes in collaborative leadership, with open and honest decision making based on the best interests of all. He loves to lead and manage, by empowering his team to excel under his guidance. He has learned through his experience of living all over the world that out of many ideas evolve the best ideas. The most powerful force in the world is the people that care enough to reach out to help others, especially when no benefit is expected in return. We need to be courageous enough to listen to others, even when we do not readily agree with them on the surface. There are always many sides to any issue. We serve and help because it is the right thing to do. SERVICE before SELF.
